Message from the Secretary General Nasser Kamel: “This year’s annual report is particularly special as it provides an overview of UfM activities during 2018; a year that marked the 10th anniversary of the Union for the Mediterranean.
While several regional challenges had stalled cooperation in the Mediterranean, several accomplishments have been achieved by the UfM owing to the Secretariat’s firm belief in the importance of building consensus among Member States and tackling the root causes of the challenges that we face. Our endeavours to build ambitious regional agendas continue as UfM cooperation reached new milestones during 2018, particularly regarding the agendas for water and for women.
Regional cooperation on trade and on civil protection has also been recently resumed under the umbrella of the UfM. Moreover, the UfM’s action-oriented approach has enabled us to achieve concrete results in socioeconomic development, transport, urban development, energy, climate action, water resource management and the environment. Such results continue improving the living conditions in a union of more than 800 million citizens.
Only together can we still reach our goals of a peaceful, stable and prosperous Mediterranean.”
