On April 2, 2019 Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned from the Algerian presidency after 20 years in power. The resignation, however, was far not enough to shatter the popular movement Hirak, which continues to pursue significant changes in the country’s governance.

With the presidential elections in December 2019 the army wanted to move away from the front line of public debate but the victory of its candidate, Abdelmajid Tebboune, with a massive abstention that undermined his legitimacy, has only further fired the Hirak’s claim for a non-military state.

This online preview of an article of the forthcoming IEMed Mediterranean Yearbook 2020 reviews the balance of power, the influence of the army and the Hirak popular movement in Algeria in the Covid-19 era.
