On April 2, 2019 Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigned from the Algerian presidency after 20 years in power. The resignation, however, was far not enough to shatter the popular movement Hirak, which continues to pursue significant changes in the country’s governance.
With the presidential elections in December 2019 the army wanted to move away from the front line of public debate but the victory of its candidate, Abdelmajid Tebboune, with a massive abstention that undermined his legitimacy, has only further fired the Hirak’s claim for a non-military state.
