The EU Ambassador to Morocco, Rupert Joy, visits today the city of Chefchaouen to take stock of the achievements on the field of the EU-project “Chefchaouen, a model municipality and initiator of a civic change in sustainable energy management”.

The project is part of the EU-funded Sustainable Urban Demonstration Projects (SUDEP-South project), through which 12 cities in 6 countries of the southern Mediterranean are supported in implementing demonstrative actions for sustainable energy. Launched in 2015 and to run until 2018, the Chefchaouen project receives EU financial support worth 10 million Dirhams.

Following the presentations of the project’s achievements, Ambassador Joy will visit the Info-Energy Centre, the first structure of its kind in Morocco as well as the “Municipality Eco Center” ecologically-built from recycled containers.

SUDEP-South project started its activities in early 2015 over 12 cities in 6 countries of the southern Mediterranean. The overall objective of the SUDEP Programme is to assist local authorities on responding to sustainable energy challenges. The specific objective is to enable local authorities to implement sustainable energy actions leading to energy savings, energy efficiency and more use of renewable energy sources as solar energy.
