We have noted the official results of the first round of the presidential elections in Tunisia which took place in a peaceful and orderly way, despite the deadline imposed by the early elections.

As a token of confidence between the EU and Tunisia and close cooperation in terms of good governance and democracy, Tunisia has asked the European Union to deploy an election observation mission in order to contribute to a quality process in compliance with the Tunisian laws and the international standards. The election observation mission has just unveiled its preliminary conclusions. The Tunisian citizens were able to exercise their civic rights.

A second round of the presidential elections and parliamentary elections organised in similar conditions will allow the Tunisian citizens to fully enjoy their civic rights to express their choices and give their future representatives all the necessary legitimacy.

The EU will remain committed in its support to the Tunisian people and the authorities.
