Refugees: enhanced controls and increased aid to refugees and host countries

At the same time “as we strengthen our external border control, we need to massively step up our support to Syrian refugees and the countries neighbouring Syria”, EU Council President Donald Tusk said after a visit to Athens on Thursday 3 March 2016, where he met with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to discuss the refugee issue.
 
The EU should also “help tackle the negative consequences in the most affected Member States, above all in Greece”, he said. “This is a matter of utmost urgency. And this is why “I welcome the Commission’s announcement yesterday of a new Emergency Assistance Instrument of 700 million euro for EU Member States, and in particular Greece, that are facing an extraordinary humanitarian crisis”, Tusk said.
