European Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy Johannes Hahn on Friday concluded a two-day official visit to Algeria with a focus on economic diversification.

Following the adoption of the Partnership Priorities by the Algeria-EU Association Council in March, Hahn said it was time to "translate these priorities into concrete actions", citing projects worth more than €200 million, covering various sectors, and aimed at supporting economic diversification in Algeria.

Commissioner Hahn expressed the EU's willingness to launch a "high-level economic dialogue" with Algeria in order to define ways of facilitating trade and enabling Algerian companies to gain greater access to the European market.

During his visit, Commissioner Hahn also launched an EU-funded Twinning project for the Ministry of Post, Telecommunications, Technology and Digital Technology, after a visit to the Sidi Abdallah CyberParc incubator. His message: the EU will support the competitiveness of Algerian companies, in particular by promoting an environment for the development of information technology.

On the sidelines of the visit, Hahn attended the signing of an electronic certification exchange agreement between the EU and Algeria, which will enable the recognition and authentication of Algerian and European biometric passports, in order to facilitate the movement of people in both directions.

On the security front, Commissioner Hahn announced the initiation of a high-level dialogue on security issues with Algeria in October, highlighting the EU's desire for stability in its neighbourhood.
