The European Union has welcomed the key role played by Algeria in the fight against the death penalty, in a statement issued by the EU Delegation in Algeria to mark the World Day against the Death Penalty yesterday.

“The European Union welcomes the key role of Algeria in this humanitarian struggle. Since 1993, Algeria has respected a moratorium on executions. When one recalls the difficult and violent years that the Algerian people have gone through since that date, one can only admire Algeria’s determination to maintain this moratorium,” the statement said, adding that at the international level, Algeria had supported UN resolution 62/149 of 2008 on the moratorium on the death penalty.

“The death penalty is incompatible with human dignity. It constitutes inhuman and degrading treatment, does not have any proven deterrent effect and allows judicial errors to become irreversible and fatal,” the EU said in a separate joint statement with the Council of Europe on 9 October.
