Dr. Jalal Nofal is a psychiatrist at the mental health center run by the Union of Medical Care & Relief Organizations (UOSSM) in Gaziantep, Turkey. The center is supported by Relief International with funding from the European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO).
Access to specialized health services is one of the major concerns for refugees in Turkey including care services in the field of mental health. Dr. Jalal sees up to seven patients a day, many of whom suffer from extremely debilitating mental health conditions.
His patients are mostly Syrian refugees. Although they have escaped from the immediate dangers of airstrikes, the traumatic experiences continue to haunt them, having a massive impact on their ability to lead normal lives in Turkey. Relief International – with European Union funding – aims to help over one thousand people with counselling and psychotherapy at the UOSSM’s centre and through a community intervention team.
