For the first time since his appointment last September, the EU Civilian Operations Commander Vincenzo Coppola visited the EU Missions in the occupied Palestinian territory from 9 to 12 April.

The visit comprised meetings with the Senior Managements of EUPOL COPPS, the European Union Police and Rule of Law Mission for the Palestinian Territory and EUBAM Rafah, the EU Border Assistance Mission for the Rafah Crossing Point; as well as with the European Union Representative in Jerusalem and the Delegation of the European Union to Israel. The visit also served to introduce the Civilian Operations Commander to some of the Missions’ strategic Palestinian counterparts. Lastly, a field trip to Jericho was included in the program. There, he visited Al-Karama terminal which serves as the main outlet for Palestinian passengers between Palestine and Jordan.

During the visit, 26 EUPOL COPPS Mission Members were awarded the Common Security and Defence Policy Service Medal on behalf of the EU High Representative, Federica Mogherini by Mr. Coppola. The medal is awarded to individuals, both uniformed and civilian, who have served in the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) Missions. Four EUBAM mission members were also awarded the CMPD Medal for having met the eligibility requirements and the necessary period of qualifying service in one of the EU Missions.
