Chefchaouen was proclaimed an “ecological city” by its city council in 2010. It has distinguished itself since then by its ongoing efforts in this respect. Thanks to the involvement of city actors and the technical and financial support of many external partners including the European Union (the SUDEP programme), GIZ, the French Development Agency and Nexans, the city of Chefchaouen is developing and experimenting with solutions to protect the environment, develop renewable energy sources and reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gases.

Today, the city of Chefchaouen is taking another step in this direction with the participative development of Vision Chefchaouen 2030, based on the economic, social, environmental, cultural and human capital of the city. As part of the programme, the municipality is organising a status update on its environmental goals which will present the solutions implemented and expertise gained in the region and the feedback of the people involved. The event took place on Wednesday, 17 October 2018 from 3:00pm to 7:30pm in the Chefchaouen municipal council hall.

Note that, as part of the support given by the European Union to eco-responsible initiatives, the city of Chefchaouen has received support under the SUDEP regional programme called “Chefchaouen: a model municipality and initiator of a civic change in sustainable energy management”.
