A group of 21 young political and community leaders from the Council of Europe’s Schools of Political Studies in Bulgaria, Tunisia and Morocco participated in the third Summer Academy for Strengthening Democracy in the Euro-Med Region, dedicated to democracy and education. The event was organised on 2530 May 2016 in Sofia, with the support of the EU-Council of Europe (CoE) joint programme “Towards Strengthened Democratic Governance in the Southern Mediterranean” (South Programme II).

In the course of the five day workshop, participants discussed migration, career development, civic participation and access to education for young people from Morocco and Tunisia. The various panels and TV debates simulations organised allowed them to improve their skills in areas such as conflict resolution and media relations.

The conclusions of the Academy will be presented during the annual World Forum for Democracy, to be organised by the Council of Europe on 79 November 2016 in Strasbourg on the theme “Education and democracy: how to bridge the social divides?”

The EU-CoE Joint Programme “Towards strengthened democratic governance in the South Mediterranean” – South Programme II, 2015-2017 – funded with a budget of €7.4 million – aims to contribute to the reinforcement of democratic governance in the Southern Mediterranean region by supporting the development of new constitutional and legal frameworks; contributing to the creation and expansion of a common legal space between Europe and the Southern Mediterranean and fostering regional co-operation in the field of human rights, Rule of law and democracy.

Co-operation activities under the South Programme are primarily directed to Morocco, Tunisia and Jordan and open to other countries from the Southern Mediterranean, through regional activities or targeted bilateral activities. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
