Experts from all the countries involved in the Euromed Police programme have been meeting over three days at Afripol headquarters in Algeria.

The first part of the meeting (27-28 February) focused on the development of a manual designed to facilitate police requests to internet service providers in the context of online terrorist investigations. This approach, undertaken in concert with the Euromed Justice programme, responds to a crying need and sticks as closely as possible to the evolution of the terrorist threat.

It is in this context that a first connection with representatives of service providers like Google and Facebook took place, giving rise to intense exchanges in an excellent working atmosphere.

The second part of the activity brought together the Euromed Police analysis network, currently involved in the production of the Euromed Threat Assessment (EMTA). This was a working meeting, supervised by the Euromed Police team, and enriched by the presence of Europol.

Europol’s participation in the meeting, hosted by its counterpart at the African level, was symbolic, in line with the rapprochement that Euromed Police intends to facilitate between the two continental police agencies.

The aim of the Euromed Police IV project is to increase citizens’ security across the Euro-Mediterranean area through the strengthening of cooperation on security issues between the Southern Mediterranean partner countries, as well as between these countries and the EU Member States. It builds on the achievements of the previous phases of the project. The project runs from 2016-2020 with a budget of €5 million.

EuroMed Justice (2016-2018) is an EU-funded project which aims to contribute to the development of a Euro-Mediterranean area of cooperation in the field of justice and to the development of effective, efficient and democratic justice systems which protect and promote human rights.
