Brief Description

The project aims to improve maritime safety and security, and to prevent marine pollution in the region. It does so by supporting the efforts of coastal states in implementing relevant international legislation, approximating their regulatory frameworks with EU legislation and improving the performance of their maritime activities.

Countries covered: Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Ukraine, Turkey and Turkmenistan

Actions in brief

The project conducts a multitude of activities designed to meet its objectives, namely:

  • Workshops, seminars and studies
  • Operational support (on-site actions, provision of services including drafting of legislation, pilot projects)
  • High-level seminars at national level with parliamentary committees, to facilitate the adoption/ratification of updated legal framework
  • Targeted bilateral assistance

Activities are conducted under seven components:

The project builds on the achievements of the EU-funded TRACECA projects ‘Development of common security management, maritime safety and ship pollution prevention for the Black Sea and Caspian Sea' – SASEPOL – (2009-2011), and 'TRACECA – Maritime Safety and Security II' (2013-2015)
