In September, the EU launched a new programme entitled "EU4MOLDOVA: Focal regions – EU for Cahul”. The programme will start in December 2019 and will work to strengthen the economic, territorial and social cohesion in the areas of Ungheni and Cahul (so called "focal-regions").
It will aim to deliver inclusive, sustainable and integrated local socio-economic growth and will contribute to improving the standards of living of citizens in the areas. According to the EU, this will drastically reduce the rural-urban divide and achieve balanced and long-lasting socio-economic development.
The EU will invest €23 million and co-funding of €0.5 million will be provided by the United Nations Development Programme.
The EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova will oversee the programme implementation. This initiative is part of the EU assistance package for the region, which will include support for the improvement of water and sanitation, the fight against corruption, IT infrastructure and education, support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups, as well gender equality, women’s empowerment and combating domestic violence.
