A new energy efficient public lighting system has been installed in the Moldovan town of Cantemir as part of the EU-supported “Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects” programme, which is part of the EU4Energy initiative.

In the framework of a specialised workshop conducted by the power distribution company “Electromagnetica”, the local authorities learned about managing the new public lighting system. The new system offers the possibility to measure electricity consumption, as well as regulate the power of every single lamppost. A real-time test of the system was performed jointly by the local administration and experts.

As a result of the project, the inhabitants of Cantemir will enjoy modern public lighting on the streets of their hometown and the town’s administration will be able to save energy and money.

Covenant of Mayors Demonstration Projects are part of the EU4Energy Initiative. EU4Energy covers all EU support to improve energy supply, security and connectivity, as well as to promote energy efficiency and the use of renewables in the Eastern Partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine). It does this by financing projects and programmes that help to reform energy markets and to reduce national energy dependence and consumption. Over the long term, this makes energy supply more reliable, transparent and affordable, thus reducing energy poverty and energy bills for both citizens and the private sector.
