On 9 April, the Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, Ambassador Matti Maasikas, travelled to Uman in the Cherkasy region.

Together with the WHO Representative, Matti Maasikas handed over a lung ventilator to the intensive care unit of the local hospital. Uman City Hospital is one of 20 hospitals that are currently receiving ventilators for their intensive care units within the WHO and European Union ‘Solidarity for Health’ Initiative and the TeamEurope approach to fight COVID-19 globally.

In Uman, the Ambassador also met Mayor Iryna Pletnyova and explored the unique heritage of Hasidic culture in Uman, supported within the EU-funded ReHERIT project. ReHERIT carries out sociological surveys focused on historical heritage, sets visual navigation through historical sites, develops tourism and pilgrimage strategies, and provides relevant educational materials to the local community.

Matti Maasikas also visited the Pavlo Tychyna Uman State Pedagogical University. In 2017, the University started to implement the MoPED project, co-funded by the EU Erasmus+ programme. The project aims at modernising pedagogical education in Ukraine by incorporating new STEM courses, along with information and communication teaching tools into curricula.
