The authorities of Bolnisi Municipality, south-eastern Georgia, have helped local entrepreneurs improve their livelihoods by providing them with practical tools and know-how on operating their businesses more efficiently. This assistance was part of the EU-funded initiative ‘Mayors for Economic Growth’ (M4EG).

Bolnisi is a multi-ethnic rural region with a population of around 53,500, of which 63% work in agriculture. However, despite the existing opportunities in the agricultural sector, local producers rarely managed to optimise production and maximise their profits.

With help from the M4EG, Bolnisi Municipality also created a two-year local economic development plan, identifying the main economic priorities and goals, as well as a concrete action plan to achieve them. The plan was given a positive assessment by independent World Bank experts.

Mayors for Economic Growth is an EU initiative, established in 2017 to support mayors and municipalities in the Eastern partner countries to facilitate economic growth and create jobs at local level.
