On 6 December, EU High Representative Federica Mogherini met with Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pavlo Klimkin. The meeting took place during the 25th Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Ministerial Council
Their meeting came ahead of this Monday's Foreign Affairs Council meeting, at which EU foreign ministers including Minister Klimkin will discuss the increase of tensions in the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait.
Representative Mogherini and Minister Klimkin discussed the latest situation in the Sea of Azov, including the state of play of the seized Ukrainian vessels and their detained crew. The EU is looking into ways to increase support to the regions of south-east Ukraine, which are being economically affected due to Russia hindering access to the Ukrainian ports through the Kerch Strait.
Minister Klimkin explained the measures being taken by Ukraine, including the introduction of martial law and its scope. Representative Mogherini reaffirmed the EU’s condemnation of the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by Russia and its continued support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty.
