Two schools and two kindergartens in the Moldovan town of Cantemir will benefit from EU support over the next three years to help improve their energy efficiency. These investments will be provided in the framework of the „Cantemir Thermal Rehabilitation of Educational Buildings – CanTREB” project. This project is part of the EU’s “Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects” programme and was launched on 27 April.
The project will involve insulation of walls, installation of a biomass boiler, optimisation of domestic heating and lighting systems, development of solar energy and the improvement of energy management.
These energy efficiency measures will help improve the comfort of over 900 children at the schools and kindergartens in Cantemir. Over 150 staff members working at these educational institutions will also benefit from better working conditions. At the same time, it will be possible to save up to 50% of the buildings’ annual energy consumption, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 11% and reduce operating and maintenance costs by 12%.
Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects (CoM-DeP) are part of the EU4Energy initiative. EU4Energy covers all EU support to improve energy supply, security and connectivity, as well as to promote energy efficiency and the use of renewables in the Eastern Partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine). It does this by financing projects and programmes that help to reform energy markets and to reduce national energy dependence and consumption. Over the long term, this makes energy supply more reliable, transparent and affordable, thus reducing energy poverty and energy bills for both citizens and the private sector.
