According to the EUvsDisinfo website, cases of disinformation related to coronavirus have been spotted for over 2 months now.

EUvsDisinfo reports that as disinformation related to the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread, its narrative remains the same: the virus is man-made, and it is a weapon created by NATO.

In addition to the COVID-19 topic, disinformation pieces also support pro-Kremlin attempts to attack the MH17 trial, or are aimed at attacking civil society in Belarus.

EU High Representative Josep Borrell said at a press conference earlier this week that under current circumstances the “[d]isinformation is playing with people’s lives. Disinformation can kill.”

The EUvsDisinfo campaign is run by the European External Action Service East Stratcom Task Force. The team was set up in March 2015, after EU heads of state and government stressed the need to challenge Russia’s ongoing disinformation campaigns.
