On 13 June, the Flood Risk Management Working Group of Azerbaijan was inaugurated in the country’s capital of Baku. Led by the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Working Group was supported by the EU-funded Programme on Prevention, Preparedness and Response to Natural and Man-made Disasters in the Eastern Partnership Countries (PPRD East 2).

The organisations that compose the Working Group are the Water Resources State Agency of Azerbaijan, several departments from the country’s Ministry of Emergency Situations and Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the Institute of Geography of Azerbaijan, and the country’s Red Crescent Society.

The aim of the Working Group is to address the approximation of the national legal and institutional flood risk management framework in Azerbaijan to the requirements of the EU Floods Directive.

The EU-funded PPRD East programme was designed to contribute to the peace, stability, security and prosperity of the EU’s Eastern Partner countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. It also aims to protect the environment, population, cultural heritage, resources and infrastructures of the region by strengthening the countries’ resilience, preparedness and response to man-made disasters and disasters caused by natural hazards.

Now in its 2nd phase, the PPRD East 2 programme facilitates the strengthening of disaster risk management capacities at national level in the six countries. It also works to strengthen regional cooperation among the partner countries, and brings the countries progressively closer to the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
