On the occasion of Safer Internet Day 2020, the Commission highlighted, on 11 February, the need to raise awareness and act on online safety issues. 

Executive Vice-President for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age, Margrethe Vestager, Vice-President Věra Jourová for Values and Transparency, Vice-President for Democracy and Demography Dubravka Šuica, Vice-President for Promoting our European Way of Life, Margaritis Schinas, Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, and Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel, stated: “Today we are celebrating Safer Internet Day. This is an important occasion to reflect upon the challenges to ensure that the internet is safe for everyone to use. Strengthening cyber security and combatting harmful content such as illegal hate speech, terrorist propaganda, child abuse content online and disinformation are key priorities for the European Union. "

Safer Internet Day is an international event taking place in February every year, which promotes a safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones by children and young people across the world. Starting as an initiative of the European Union in 2004, this initiative has grown and is now celebrated in around 150 countries worldwide, uniting millions of people in events and activities. This year marks the 17th annual celebration of safer internet use.
