Border guards from Ukraine and Belarus trained on migration management and border control in Portugal

Border guards from Belarus and Ukraine have learned about modern techniques in combating irregular migration and conducting immigration control during a study visit to Portugal on 13-17 October.  The visit was organized under an EU-funded project, Strengthening surveillance and bilateral coordination capacity along the common border between Belarus and Ukraine – SURCAP (Phase II)

Participants familiarized themselves with the best practices in the field of immigration, asylum, and border control in Portugal through site visits to the Immigration and Border Police Headquarters and field offices, Lisbon airport’s border checkpoint and other facilities and institutions.

In addition, border officials from Belarus and Ukraine established working relations with their Portuguese colleagues. In order to ensure further sustainability and long lasting effects, the Belarusian and Ukrainian border guards will share knowledge with the staff of their own border agencies and remain in contact with their new Portuguese counterparts.

SURCAP II is funded by the European Union and implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).The project will help increase operational efficiency of the Belarusian and Ukrainian border services in central and western areas of the countries' joint frontier.
