ENPI-FLEG study recommends ways to improve Ukraine forestry sector

Recommendations to improve Ukrainian forest harvesting practices and legislation have been put forward following World Bank research carried out under the ENPI-FLEG Programme.

The research recommends organising a broad discussion of problems connected to current legislation, considering the possibility of a comprehensive review of Ukrainian legislation regulating forest harvesting, and initiating a pilot project to test EU rules and regulations on forest use under the climate conditions of the Ukrainian Polissya region.

The main purpose of the research was to analyse the consequences of applying Ukrainian rules and regulations governing forest harvesting, and to provide a comparison of these regulations with those in other countries. The research also aimed to identify inadequate provisions in the legislation and to develop recommendations on how to eliminate them.

All findings of this research have been submitted to the State Agency for Forest Resources of Ukraine for further consideration.

The €6 million ENPI Forest Law Enforcement and Governance (FLEG) programme supports governments, civil society and the private sector in the development of sound and sustainable forest management practices, including the prevention of illegal forestry activities. (ENPI Info Centre)
