A symposium was held in Algiers last week on the reduction of sugar, salt and fat in foods, as part of an EU-funded Twinning project on consumer protection between Algeria and the United Kingdom.

The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Trade, and attended by experts from Algeria and abroad, specialising in market surveillance and consumer protection, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Health, the food and drinks industries and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

This symposium was an opportunity for the different branches of the Ministry of Commerce to recall the many measures already taken by the Ministry to reduce the sugar content in certain food products.

The Director of Quality and Consumer Affairs at the Ministry stressed that, “nutritional labelling allows for better visibility of the sugar, salt and fat content of foods. The consumer is then free to opt for what best suits his needs and his health condition.”
