Following the information days held during the last quarter of 2016, for the Algerian communes – Algiers for the central region, Oran for the west and Annaba for the eastern region, the EU-funded CES-MED project is organising an information day on 7 June in Ghardaia on the Covenant of Mayors initiative (CoM) and the new energy planning tools available to communes (Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SECAP)) for the benefit of local authorities in the south of Algeria.

The objective of the information day, which will bring together several local authorities from the wilayas (governorates) of Ghardaïa, Laghouat and Ouargla, is to present the latest results of the CES-MED project in Algeria and at the regional level, to promote the CoM at the three Wilayas level and to encourage the rallies of the communes to join the Covenant of Mayors. This initiative follows the three pilot actions conducted by the project with the communes of Batna, Sidi-Bel-Abbès and Boumerdès (preparation of their Baseline Emission Inventories techniques (BEI) and Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAP)) and aims at initiating the preparation of the SECAPs in order to study the feasibility of inter-communal energy planning action in Algeria.

The “Cleaner and Energy Saving Mediterranean Cities” (CES-MED) project is an EU-funded regional initiative set up to provide training and technical assistance support to local and national authorities in the southern Mediterranean region, with a view to helping them respond more actively to sustainable policy challenges.

CES-MED ensures that the actions proposed match with the objectives of the Covenant of Mayors: to reach and even go beyond the European objective to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% thanks to the improvement of energy efficiency and the increased use of sustainable energy.
