Representatives of local authorities and non-profit organisations from the Belarusian Covenant of Mayors signatory cities met on 8 June. During the conference "Covenant of Mayors Agreement for Climate and Energy: Experience and Cooperation", the representatives discussed reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change in Belarusian cities.
Special attention was given to financial instruments that cities can use to carry out activities on energy efficiency and adaptation to climate change. Representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO) presented current projects in Belarus and the terms of cooperation with public and private services.
Participants discussed ways to improve interaction and exchanges of experience between Belarusian signatory cities, as well as visiting several demonstration projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change.
Currently, 22 Belarusian cities are participating in the initiative. Two support structures in Belarus – the IPO "Ecopartnership" and the "Interaction" foundation – are working to advise on accession to and participation in the initiative.
