On 12 June, the EU launched the project “Enhancement of National Capacities to Combat Human Trafficking in Azerbaijan” (ENCT). The project, which is being implemented together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan and the International Organisation for Migration, will enhance judicial capacity to better prosecute traffickers and protect victims, strengthen the National Referral Mechanism and enhance regional and international cooperation.
The project was presented to government bodies, representatives of diplomatic corps, NGOs and media at a kick-off event. EU Ambassador to Azerbaijan Malena Mard highlighted that, in focusing on human trafficking, the project is targeting a serious form of organised crime: “Trafficking of human beings is expressively prohibited in the EU and addressing trafficking means upholding fundamental rights.”
“Enhancement of National Capacities to Combat Human Trafficking in Azerbaijan” (ENCT) is a two-year project with a total budget of EUR 700,000.
